In their half-yearly fine art auction, Bonhams present 162 lots, an unusually large offering including a number of Aboriginal artworks. Closer inspection of the catalogue reveals that the first 19 lots are from mixed vendors, and the remainder is made up from just two collections: the Bonita Croft and late Gene Zemaitis collection comprising lots 20 to 58, while the majority, lots 59 to 162, are from the collection of the Late Michael Hobbs OAM. Both these collections allow a revealing insight into the reasons for collecting, as well as the style and range of a collection. In particular the Hobbs collection presents some wonderful "small" and early works of younger artists. Their lower spectrum of estimates, starting from $700, surely would make for an enticing entry into buying in the fine art auction room. Bonhams will donate a part of their proceeds to the establishment of the Michael Hobbs People's Choice Award, partnered with Contour 556 which supports Australian artists and foster the role of art. Personal viewing in Sydney is from 14 to 19 June at the NCJWA Hall, 111 Queen Street, Woollahra, and online at the Bonhams' website. The auction takes place in the same venue on Wednesday, 20 June, starting at 6 pm.
